Flame Proof Fabrics - Polyester

Polyester is commonly referred as long chain polymers and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) that comprises of naturally occurring chemicals such as synthetics and the cutin of plant cuticles. Developed in 20th century laboratory, this fabric composed of a dihydric alcohol, terephthalic acid and at least 85% of an ester by weight. In simpler terms, it means the blend of various esters within the fibers. The chemical reaction between a carboxylic acid and alcohol results in the formation of polyester fibers.

Polyester also refers to another category of polymers in which spine is formed by esterification condensation of acids and polyfunctional alcohols. Basically, polyester is classified into two main categories- saturated and unsaturated. Saturated polyesters refer to that polyester which has saturated backbone. In the reaction of this family of polyesters, the usual reactants are an acid or anhydride and glycol. While unsaturated polyesters widely used in reinforced plastics have the backbone comprising of alkyl thermosetting resins distinguish by vinyl unsaturation.

Uses of Polyester Fiber

Polyester is the most commonly used fiber in the manufacturing of a variety of products such as home furnishings, recording tapes, clothing, industrial fabrics, liquid crystal displays, film insulation of wires, holograms, outerwear, filling pillows and etc. Polyester clothes are gaining the popularity from many centuries because of its property of not absorbing the moisture. PET bottles are one of the biggest applications of polyester fiber these days.
